Despite AIADMK snub, BJP upbeat to face LS polls after Modi’s whirlwind trip | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Despite being shunned by the AIADMK and kept on wait by the hard-bargaining PMK and DMDK, the BJP has kick-started its 2024 Lok Sabha poll campaign with a roar in Tamil Nadu as the party’s brand ambassador and Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the state five times this year.
The saffron party, which inked a pact with smaller parties and outfits, including TMC and AMMK and estranged AIADMK leader and former chief minister O Panneerselvam, would hope for a better performance in Tamil Nadu in Lok Sabha polls this year.
The party could not win a single seat in 2019 Lok Sabha polls when it contested in alliance with the AIADMK and PMK. The party won from Kanyakumari Lok Sabha seat in 2014. “This is the first time in poll history that a Prime Minister visited Tamil Nadu five or more times in three months. BJP’s strategy is clear. The party is confident of performing well in the northern part of the country,” said a BJP functionary, seeking anonymity.
The party was keen, he said, on establishing a strong base in the south, particularly Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Karnataka. “The message is loud and clear and the messenger, our leader Narendra Modi, is working day and night to accomplish the party’s dreams,” said the BJP functionary. The BJP has already inked a pact with TMC, and AMMK, and managed to rope in Panneerselvam to bolster its chances of winning seats in the southern part of the state.
The party’s Tamil Nadu leaders, including state president K Annamalai, have launched all-out efforts to face the polls successfully. Modi who visited Kanyakumari on Friday would again visit Coimbatore and Salem next week. The saffron party, however, is keen to bring PMK and DMDK into its fold. Both parties have been driving a hard bargain. Sources say that PMK is likely to opt for the BJP alliance.
“We must accept the fact that even though we are a strong party with a nationwide presence, we have not made a mark in Tamil Nadu. We need to ally with stronger regional parties in Tamil Nadu to ensure the growth of the party in the state,” said another BJP functionary. BJP sources say that its allies are likely to share a stage with Modi when he addresses a public meeting in Salem on Tuesday.
In the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, the alliance led by DMK won 38 of the 39 seats. The alliance led by AIADMK, in which BJP and PMK were constituents among others, could manage to win only one seat. The lone Lok Sabha seat in Puducherry was bagged by the Congress, DMK’s ally
